Lancashire Police are appealing for witnesses and dashboard mounted camera footage after a serious collision close to Junction 3 of the M65.
Police were called around 12.05pm yesterday (Thursday, September 2) to a report of a collision involving a Nissan Note and Fiat 500.
It is believed the Nissan had travelled contra-flow up the M65 Junction 3 westbound off-slip. After reaching the top of the slip road, the vehicle attempted to turn hard left and join traffic travelling westbound towards Preston.
The car was then involved in a collision with the Fiat.
The driver of the Nissan, a 79-year-old woman from Bury, suffered serious internal injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment. A passenger in the car, an 83-year-old woman from Radcliffe, suffered a wrist fracture.
The driver of the Fiat, a 25-year-old woman from Barnoldswick, suffered whiplash injuries.
The road was closed for five hours while accident investigators attended the scene.
Police are appealing for witnesses including dashboard mounted camera footage.
Sgt Finn Quainton, of Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations, said:
“We are appealing for information following a serious injury collision close to Junction 3 of the M65.
“We believe a Nissan car, travelling on the roundabout at Junction 3, has travelled contra-flow up the westbound off-slip. The driver has attempted a hard left to join westbound traffic before being involved in a collision with a Fiat car.
“The motorway is likely to have been very busy and I believe many people, travelling both westbound and eastbound, will have seen what happened. If you have any information, or dashcam footage showing what took place, please get in touch.”
Anyone with information can contact police on 101 or email 1086@lancashire.police.uk quoting log 0544 of September 2.
